In 2007, the Miller-Dwan Foundation with generous leadership support from Republic Bank, Lois and Jeno Paulucci and gifts from 1,500 other committed individuals created and built this region’s only residential hospice house, Solvay Hospice House. Together our community realized a dream of a home that provides families with an opportunity to work through the worst of times in the best possible way.
While for most people, the ideal hospice setting is their own home, not everyone has the support or resources to die at home. Solvay Hospice House brings the expertise of hospice care into the warm and welcoming environment of a home setting. It gives hospice patients and families a place that provides 24 hour, high quality, compassionate end of life care.
Solvay Hospice House provides 12 rooms for people at the end of life. This attractive residence, located on 9.2 acres of wooded land at 801 Baylis Street in Duluth, offers a meditation area, a music room, a sun room, a family computer room and an outdoor screened gazebo. Because patient comfort is paramount, the home also includes a spa room for gentle baths, aromatherapy and massage. Spacious private bedrooms include a large bathroom, exceptional patient beds, entertainment center, sleeper chair and comfortable seating, as well as sliding glass doors to private patios overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds.
At its essence, Solvay Hospice House is a peaceful haven – a place that allows people to spend their time in the most meaningful way possible. A place where patients, families, and friends are supported. A place to reconcile and remember. Solvay Hospice House is a place of dignity, comfort and peace.
Solvay Hospice House is the first of its kind in our region and the only one in Minnesota, north of the Twin Cities. It is staffed and operated by St. Mary’s Hospice and Palliative Care Program and can admit patients from any regional hospice provider. Miller-Dwan Foundation owns Solvay Hospice House and is committed to continued stewardship for both the home and the care of patients.
